I started studying astronomy only at the end of my physics undergraduate degree which I completed in 2001 at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. The physics bachelors degree in Portugal has a very strong mathematics basis to it. This prepares the students (those who manage to finish it...) to deal with most mathematics-related problems in the real world (Oh I reallllyyy need to know how to solve partial derivates in complex space when I go to buy the groceries!!!).
After finishing the undergraduate in physics I started a masters in astronomy, also at the University of Lisbon, which I did not finish because I was, very thankfully, guided into graduate school at the Astronomy Department of the University of Florida.
