RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

2001-present My Ph. D. research is a survey of eight open clusters for transiting close-in extrasolar planets. It involves high precision (better than 1% rms scatter) optical relative photometry of images from a grand total of about half a year’s allocation of 1-m telescope time, a search for variables within the light curves, and spectroscopic follow-ups of interesting candidate variables.
2002 My M. Sc. level research project, incorporated into my five-year Ph. D. program, was an investigation into the utility of the shapelet basis function decomposition as a tool for galaxy analysis, supervised by Prof. Roberto Abraham.
2001 For my undergraduate honours project in spring 2001, I used Code V to design a multi-conjugate adaptive optics laboratory testbed, which I was hired to continue working on for the summer of 2001.
2000 As a summer student at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, I was supervised by Prof. Norm Murray in using an n-body code to simulate the effects of giant planet migration in the early solar system.
1999 For my second undergraduate co-operative education work term at the TRIUMF cyclotron, Univ. of British Columbia, I assisted Dr. John Behr in calibrations of detectors for a neutral atom trap, and in measuring radioactive decays of excited Kr and Rb.
1998 For my first undergraduate co-operative education work term at the TRIUMF cyclotron, Univ. of British Columbia, I constructed and tested two prototype drift chambers for Dr. Andy Miller.

Computing Skills:

Languages: C, Fortran-77, Java. Platforms: Linux, Windows. Markup: LaTeX, some HTML.

Analysis Tools: IRAF, SuperMongo, IDL, PPP (H. Yee’s photometry package), DAOPHOT, awk, Bourne shell scripts, and other UNIX tools.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Teaching:

2005-2006 Teaching assistant, AST325/326 (specialist undergraduate astronomy observational lab course). Duties include lab section instruction, assignment coordination and grading. Supervisor: Prof. S. Mochnacki.
2001-2005 Teaching assistant, various courses, including AST221 and AST222 (specialist undergraduate courses on stars and galaxies), AST101 and AST201 (general science elective courses for arts students), AST121 (astronomy survey course for science students), and AST251 (astronomy and astrobiology course for science students). Duties included leading tutorials, some substitute lecturing and setting of questions on assignments and exams, and grading. Various supervisors including Profs. Y. Wu, J. Dubinski, R. Abraham, and C. Clement.

Administrative:

2004-2005 President, Graduate Astronomy Students Association, Dept. of Astronomy, U. Toronto. I communicated with the departmental faculty and administration on behalf of graduate students, collating concerns and requests and broaching them diplomatically, led organization of departmental social events, and oversaw our participation in our larger, umbrella unions.
2002-2003 Treasurer, Graduate Astronomy Students Association, Dept. of Astronomy, U. Toronto. I oversaw the finances of the association, including a change of bank.
2000
House Manager, Campus Co-op. I oversaw day-to-day maintenance of a student residence, and designed and led a major landscaping revitalization of the local cluster of residences.
