S. Nicholas Raines

Nick Raines is an Assistant Scientist at the University of Florida's Dept. of Astronomy. He is an instrument scientist with the Infrared Astrophysics Group, which designs, builds, and commissions infrared instruments for large telescopes around the world.

He is also the instrument scientist for FLAMINGOS, the world's first fully cryogenic near-infrared (1 - 2.5 micron) multi-object spectrometer; it is also a wide field imager. Presently he is supporting FLAMINGOS operations from Gainesville, while concentrating on FLAMINGOS-2, a version of FLAMINGOS optimized for Gemini South.

His research interests include:

Infrared instrumentation for large telescopes
Star formation, including

Herbig-Haro Objects and Outflows
Embeded Clusters in Molecular Clouds

FLAMINGOS News

FLAMINGOS is available for observations at the 2.1-m and 4-m Mayall telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory (where it is available to the astronomical community). It is available for the 2005B and 2006A semesters.
