The Department of Astronomy invites the University of Florida and the Gainesville communities to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy!

Highlights

A monthly lecture series will feature UF Astronomers and special astronomy guest speakers. These talks will generally take place on Friday evenings in the New Physics Building and will be followed by an open public observing night at the nearby Campus Teaching Observatory. See the link on the left to view the lecture schedule and other details.

The Department of Astronomy together with the Florida Museum of Natural History will host a special astronomy event on September 25th. The event will take place at the museum from 5pm to 10pm and will feature a special guest lecture, a visit from an astronaut, our portable planetarium, a 3-D tour of the universe using the Astro-Wall, and many other activities for children and adults. In the evening we will have several telescopes available for night sky viewing courtesy of the Alachua County Astronomy Club.

On April 3rd we had a special event to recognize the 100 Hours of Astronomy Cornerstone Project. We hosted a special evening talk by Professors Rafael Guzmán and Elizabeth Lada on the topic of telescopes from the time of Galileo to the present and future. We featured the completion of UF's telescope in the Canary Islands, the Gran Telescopio Canarias, as it begins its first scientific observations this spring. After the talk, the astronomy department in conjunction with the Alachua County Astronomy Club hosted a telescope workshop to assist people in assembling and using their own telescopes starting at 6:30pm. The public also had an excellent opportunity to view Venus and the first quarter Moon at the Campus Teaching Observatory. The special evening talk began at 7:20pm in room 1002 of the New Physics Building, preceded and followed by the workshop and public telescope viewing until 10:30pm. Thank to all of you that made this event a success!
