Sun-N-Fun

Sun-N-Fun ( April 8-13 )  is coming up and I there was a question about when and if the Night Show would be put on.

While all agreed that it is on Firday if it is held, I got a communication back from SNF. As follows:

The night airshow will be held on Friday April, 11th.  We are updating the schedule of events as we compile the information.  www.sun-n-fun.org/convention.

February Fly-in breakfast

This last weekend ( Feb 2 ) the weather was as perfect as it gets, a little cool  no clouds only a slight breeze, warm sun and a LOT of planes.

I lost count at 49 or so.  I actually got there before the food line was closing and found out that there is actually sun before 10:30 a.m.  J

Seriously though, mornings like this are what aviation is all about, great skies and great people.  I hope this is a good omen for the spring season..

June 19, 2007 Meeting

The meeting last night ( June 19, 2007 ) was at Grill Master’s.  Several projects were discussed at length especially Jim Culp’s Sonex which apparently is coming along quite nicely.  Of course it should as he said that he is putting in 7 hours / day 6 days / week.  At this rate we will have something new to talk about at every meeting, but only for a few more months J.  Perhaps we should start a pool in the chapter to guess when he will be signed off.  I think that I recall that Jim said that he got his engine in.  It is a Jabaru 6 cyclinder.  That thing should climb like a rocket with what everyone agreed was a beautiful engine choice.  He also is going to put in a glass cockpit.  This raised the question whether Experimentals needed to follow the same rules as Certified A/C regarding steam gauge backups.  There was not consensus but a lot of opinion.  All in all a great report with lots of cool stuff and we are all looking forward to another chapter completion.  ( Jim if you are taking pictures we will post them here so everyone can take a look. )

Joe Lesanke’s Bear Hawk is also coming along well, but more slowly as apparently he does not have enough discipline to stop enjoying his R/C models.  From past discussions however, I seem to remember that Buzz was the instigator in this.???  Well I guess flying is flying.  Anyhow, a couple of pics of Joe’s instrument panel are pointed to below.  When discussing them with Scott Powell, we wondered why Fuses not Breakers.  Joe then explained the rationale behind his choice.  He read a manual by Bob Nuckolls of AeroElectric Connection which made the point(s) 1) If properly designed there should never be a blown fuse or breaker trip 2) if there is a blown fuse, there is a fault that needs attention 3) Resetting the breaker does not cure the fault and lastly 4) if it is a non critical system, inflight diagnosis is not a good idea , I.E. fly the plane.  One last practical point is that breakers cost between 20 and 35 dollars and fuse holders at 1.5 to 2.5 dollars.  Ten fuses x 25 dollars is the price of another instrument.  Anyhow we got a well thought out answer to a simple question.  At the last Saturday Flying Tiger breakfast, Joe did confess that he was going to try to put aside his toys for a while and switch back to “real” plane work.  Hey Joe, to support you in your effort, you can leave your “toys” at my hangar where I could take good “care” of them.. J

We also saw a short video provided by Manfred Gotschal of our B-17 ride from GVN to JAX.  The video was shot as I recall by his son in law from the ground of our start up and departure.  Once airborne we were allowed to roam all over the A/C ( except the tail gunner’s position ).  The view from the bombardier’s position was incredible.  Just above the navagator’s table there is a sextant buble.  This was a bit different in that looking aft you are looking right into the cockpit’s windscreen.  I got a picture from there somewhere.  I will try to dig it up.  Discussion also revolved around the open “hatch” that was aft of the top turret.  The view from this position was great as well, though you had to be careful of the slipstream, I would have lost my camera if I hadn’t been holding on firmly with both hands.  Discussion about this “hatch” seemed to call into question it’s purpose.  So with the power of the internet, this morning I did a little ( I mean really little ) digging.  I will leave the conclusion to the link that I found. Joe Lisankie’s Bear Hawk Instrument panel (1) (2) .

Since he is not going to be flying real soon, I wonder if he would rent out the stack??  Hmmmm….
