It was a difficult decision to make but for New Years of 2004-2005 I opted to go
and set foot on South America (for the first time) instead of visiting family in
Portugal.
Since I knew a family of colombian natives, Colombia was the perfect
destination!
I set out from Miami on the 26th of December 2004, flew to the airport of San
Jose, Costa Rica, (where while awaiting the connecting flight I learned about
the tsunami in Asia) and then another short flight to Bogota.
I recall being very nervous during the whole flight, and even upon leaving my
house, not because of the what everyone I knew had said about the sketchy
reputation of Colombia but because I was going to meet up with people I had not
seen in 12 years!
In the end it turned out to be an amazing experience and I was already thinking
about returning to Colombia (and South America) even before having left it!!
