Terms Relating to Producing Spectra
(Dispersion relates to "distributing" or "separating" while both refraction and diffraction relate to "turning," "bending" or "changing direction.")
Dispersion The separation of light either by refraction (uses a prism) or diffraction (uses a grating). Refraction Change in direction of waves when passing
from one medium into another.Diffraction Change in direction of waves after passing
an obstacle.
