Where Can I use FLAMINGOS?

FLAMINGOS will be made available to all astronomers through a cooperative agreement with the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO). FLAMINGOS will be available for at least 4 runs each year on the Kitt Peak 4-m and 2.1-m telescopes. Since FLAMINGOS is highly portable and can function on any telescope slower than f/7 we will be interested in taking FLAMINGOS to other large telescopes. If you are interested in having FLAMINGOS visit your telescope contact Richard Elston (elston@astro.ufl.edu)

Possible stars for follow-up spectroscopy with FLAMINGOS are
marked with blue boxes. The original image is a mosaic of SQIID
images taken with the KPNO 50" telescope by E. Lada.

For imaging FLAMINGOS will have J, H, K and a short-K filter. FLAMINGOS should perform like any other HgCdTe imager but will give a 10'x10' FOV on the 4-m and nearly twice this field on the 2.1-m.

the stars selected from the NGC 2024 image shown above. Good S/N is
achieved as faint as 14 magnitude in this simulation

MOS spectroscopy with FLAMINGOS will require advanced planning since multi-slit plates must be made in advance. But long slit spectra can be obtained using a series of slits which will always be present in FLAMINGOS.
