Observing Asteroids

• Then: Need enough observations to calculate a preliminary orbit
  • need a minimum of 3 spaced out points
  • 30 day arc is OK, 50 day arc is best

• Finally: Need observations at several apparitions to calculate a reliable orbit
  • to recover object at distant future oppositions
  • allow the asteroid to be Numbered and Named
