AST1002 New Horizons In Astronomy

An introductory physical science course. This course aims to provide the student with an introduction to the methods and practice of a physical science, as well as an overview of the Astronomical universe. Back to Top

Research

SPOT imageSouth Pole Optical Telescope

Each year, from austral summer 1984-85 through austral summer 1987-88 JPO travelled to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station as part of the UF South Pole Optical Telescope team. SPOT was a small telescope which operated for several seasons evaluating observing conditions in the visible region of the optical spectrum at the South Pole. Back to Top

LDEF imageLDEF Interplanetary Dust Experiment

JPO was a co-Investigator and member of the Science Team for IDE data analysis. IDE was carried on the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility) spacecraft. Launched in April, 1984, LDEF reamined in orbit for almost 6 years. The IDE experiment carried 456 microparticle impact detectors. The precise time of each impact was recorded on magnetic tape for the first 346 days in orbit. Back to Top

OMDC imageOMDC

JPO was a co-Investigator and member of the Science Team for the Clementine Orbital Monitoring of Debris Counts (OMDC) experiment. He is involved in the OMDC science data acquisition and distribution. OMDC is comprised of 48 microparticle impact sensors (similar to the IDE sensors) mounted on the Interstage Adaptor left in Earth orbit after the Clementine spacecraft boosted for the moon. At least 75 orbital debris and natural particle impacts were recorded at distances between 300 km and 140,000 km from Earth.
