JPO's observing notes; Gainesville Florida (+30°N, 82.5°W) *************************** * Jan 18/19 05:50 AM EST: * *************************** Went to field behind house ... Comet easy object in 10x50 binocs; short tail visible. Not naked eye due to city glow and proximity (5°) to horizon. *************************** * Jan 19/20 06:15 AM EST: **************************** Went south to Paynes Prarie ... fog everywhere :( *************************** * Jan 20/21 06:10 AM EST: **************************** Went west to airport ... good dark sky 'cept for very low cloud lit by Na lamp. Comet easy in binocs ... visible to naked eye but not very ... *************************** * Mar 02 05:50 AM EST: * *************************** Woke up grandaughters (Beth 9 and Moira 6) at 05:45 AM EST ... we walked down the street past the streetlight ... while still un the light pool Moira said "You mean that fuzzy bright star up there". This is one bright comet. Beth and Moira agree that Hale-Bopp is a LOT better than Hyakatake as far as being able to "just look up and see it right away". *************************** * Mar 08 05:10 AM EST: * *************************** Set up 4in Meade on tripod in street with ST-8 piggybacked. Finally got everything tuned and aligned by about 5:45 ... sky getting bright but got a few nice images. *************************** * Mar 10 05:50 AM EST: * *************************** Set up Meade 4/ST-8 at 4:30AM ... Clouds rolled in at 4:45AM ... 60 second glimpse of H-B at about 5:15 AM just to prove I was looking in the correct direction. Took one nice image of trees and clouds :( *************************** * Mar 11 05:00 AM EST: * *************************** Set up Meade 4/ST-8 at 4:30AM ... took several good exposures of comet *************************** * Mar 12 04:30 AM EST: * *************************** Richard Jarnagin & I raced to Rosemary Hill Observatory ... fog on mountain top :-( Found clear patch on way back to town ... very dark sky ... easy view of comet and tail. *************************** * Mar 13 04:00 AM EST: * *************************** severe clouds :-(
