I study the spectral differences between visual and UV wavelengths of 
early-type galaxies with optical AGN using data from the archive of the 
International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite mission and optical spectra 
from observations. I found that visual properties of the active galaxies 
are similar to those observed in UV spectra. In addition, the UV excess 
depends on metal-line strength and is probably due to a metal-rich hot 
stellar population and often observed in active galaxies.
