We went over the details every aspiring observer needs to know like what to look out for in atmospheric and weather conditions, materials that they should bring, and how to make the most of a clear night with a strong telecope. This meeting served as a general lesson as well as specific preparation for our trip to Rosemary Hill Observatory.

Monday, October 23, 2017

We had a lesson on the ins and outs of outreach! President Megan Newsome explained the "Astronomy in a Cup" activity, member Michael Heslar taught about his exoplanet activity, and Vice President John Della Costa went over his "random walk" activity detailing a photon's trip from the center of the Sun to the Sun's surface. Afterwards we signed up volunteers for the Astronomy Department's biggest outreach event of the year, Starry Night, which featured each activity taught!

AAS Outreach Director Connor McLellan gave us a presentation on his experience with research as a student at UF. He not only told about his actual research work, but also went into detail about how he came about doing research, and what he wish he knew going into it. His presentation can be found on our Facebook page or can be downloaded here.

AAS Vice President John Michael Della Costa provided us a brilliant lesson on introductory astrophotography by teaching us about telescopes, observing strategy, and even some programming. His walkthrough presentation is available online. The skills learned from this meeting are applicable at many of AAS events including visits to the Campus Teaching Observatory and Rosemary Hill Observatory.
