Dr. Rebecca Pitts successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis entitled “On Dust, Carbon Monoxide, and Molecular Hydrogen in the Census of High- and Medium-Mass Stars.” Dr. Pitts will continue her pioneering investigations into star formation and the interstellar medium through a postdoctoral fellowship at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Congratulations to Dr. Pitts!
Dr. Nolan Grieves successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Characterizing Fundamental Properties of Stars and Investigating their Brown Dwarf and Planet Companions.” Dr. Grieves will continue his field-leading work at the University of Geneva starting in the fall. Congratulations to Dr. Grieves!
Graduate Students Qi Li and Yinan Zhao have been awarded graduate fellowships through the University of Florida Informatics Institute (UFII). Both students will use these fellowships to further their astronomy research focused on massively parallel simulations and deep learning applications in astronomical big data. Congratulations to Qi and Yinan!
Dr. Yigit Dallilar successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Infrared Instrumentation and Jet Formation in Black Hole Binaries“. Dr. Dallilar will now be moving onto a postdoctoral position at the MPE where he will continue his impactful work on Infrared Instrumentation. Congrats to Dr. Dallilar!
The Astronomy Department is excited to welcome 8 new students to our department! These students were selected from a highly competitive pool of international applicants and have received a wide range of outside recognition including competitive awards for research presentations and funded graduate school fellowships. We’re excited to welcome this incoming class!
Former UF Graduate Student Ji Wang has been hired as an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University. Ji received his Ph.D. in Astronomy from UF in 2012 with a thesis entitled “Toward Massive Detection of Planets Around M-Dwarfs Using the Radial Velocity Technique” before going on to postdoctoral positions at Yale and Caltech. Prof. Wang is recognized as an authority in exoplanet detection and characterization.
