Mid-resolution InfRAreD Astronomical Spectrograph

The Mid-resolution InfRAreD Astronomical Spectrograph (MIRADAS) is a near–infrared (1–2.5 micron) multi–object spectrometer instrument proposed for the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), in response to an Announcement of Opportunity for new instrumentation. Led by UF PI Prof. Steve Eikenberry and an international team of scientists and engineers from 8 institutions and 3 countries, MIRADAS will use a sophisticated multiplexing system to deliver multi-object R(λ/(δλ)∼20,000 spectra of up to 20 objects simultaneously over a 5 arcminute diameter field of regard.

As a member on the instrument definition for this instrument I utilized my systems engineering experience with FLAMINGOS-2 to identify crucial aspects of the design which will require careful consideration and future trade-off studies. This included identification of the type of detector arrays to use and how they are mounted and wired, identification of the types of motors, limit switches, and temperature sensors, as well as the number of required wires for the sensors and approximately 50 mechanism motors. I obtained price estimates for each of these, wrote System Design Notes, and worked closely with Prof. Eikenberry and the Project Manager, Andy Howell, in the cost estimating and project management plan.
